Abstraction
What is abstract?
Abstraction is also known as non-object, experimental, conceptual or concrete photography is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world.

Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes."- Ashile Gorky
For this task we had to put the photos in order from most to least abstract photos. I thought the photo on the left was most abstract because of the bright colours and the patterns on the table. I also think that the photo on the right side is least abstract because there isn't many colours, but I like how the shadow is the subject of the photo .
Formal elements
Light: A triangular slash of bright sunlight appears in the middle of the image. This is accompanied by bands of light running diagonally across the upper portion of the image. These appear to be gaps in another object out of shot, a fence perhaps
Line & Shape: There are number of strong lines, mostly straight, although these are complemented by the sweeping curve of the main object which runs from the top right of the image to the bottom right. All of the lines have the geometric quality of man made objects
Focus:The whole subject is in focus. However, there is a slight softening of the focus towards the bottom of what appears to be the edge of a table top.
Repetition: The shafts of sunlight running across two surfaces create a dramatic rhythm. A number if straight parallel lines are repeated in the composition, like repeated notes or beats in a piece of music.
Space: The space in the image appears quite shallow, tightly constrained by the cropping. We don't the whole of any of the objects and the photographer appears to have been quite close to the subject.
Texture: All of the objects in the image appear smooth. The drama comes from the jagged bursts of light across their surfaces.
Value/Tone: The image contains a range of tones from very dark to very light. There are deep shadows but also mid tones. The photograph is monochrome but has a brownish tint, perhaps caused by the paper the artist has used.

Abstract photoshoot
WWW:My photos show that I now I have a clear idea of what abstract photos look like
EBI: My photos would be better if I had made my pictures them more clear and less blurry and if I had taken more photographs
EBI: My photos would be better if I had made my pictures them more clear and less blurry and if I had taken more photographs
For this task I had to draw the photograph on the left and write some of my thoughts down. When I first saw this photograph I thought it was quite boring because it didn't have a variety of colours and I didn't think it was abstract at all. I now think the photograph is abstract because it has some of the focal elements such as lines and light.

Home Abstract photoshoot
WWW: I have taken pictures that has a few of the formal elements in it and I have a clear idea of what I want to do for my abstract book.
EBI: It would be better if have taken more photos.

For this task we looked at the first photogram. Photograms over time has changed its name and design many times.
Photogram collage
In this lesson I made a collage out of photograms by cutting them into pieces and sticking it onto paper. I first cut some of the photograms and moved them around on the paper to see how it would look. When I started sticking them down I had decided to change the layout.
WWW: I had made many shapes out of the photogram
EBI: It would be better if I had used the circle cutter and the hole puncher.

WWW: I focused on one formal element which was lines. I took pictures wow the lines by changing the angle of how I take the picture.

The formal element I chose to concentrate on is lines.
WWW: I managed to focus on one formal element and I have taken many similar photographs
EBI: Next time I can try to take more photographs or even try a different formal element such as focus or repetition.

Dafna Talmor workshop
This photograph is a collage of different landscapes. There are photos of purple rocks stuck on top of photos of the sea, this makes the collage look more like a photo taken inside of a cave with the sea in the background. The brown edges around some of the pieces of the photos taken makes the photo looked burned.

Puzzled 'em
Puzzled'em is a game using photographs of objects taken in unusual angles. The game is played by looking at the photographs and guessing what the object is. In this lesson we played it. It was hard to guess what the objects were because they were in black and white.

Saul Leiter
I go out to take a walk, I see something, I take a picture. I take photographs. I have avoided profound explanations of what I do. -Saul Leiter
Saul Leiter was an American photographer in the 1940s and 1950s. He would take many photographs of umbrellas. His photographs had key features to them. They would reflections mirror and windows, shallow depths, vibrant and complimentary colour combinations, negative spaces and parallel lines going through his photos.

What I learned from making my Saul Leiter painting
I noticed that most of the photograph soft and out of focus apart from one section of the photograph, this makes it look like there is a barrier . I noticed that I was mainly using the colours white and blue and that the colours were easy to blend together.
